Sage and the Meddling Kids by falingard Sage and the Meddling Kids by falingard
I was watching random youtube videos the other day, and I realized that Scooby-Doo was not alone... there were actually TONS of animated series with incredibly similar premises around the same time (i.e. before I was born), nearly all made by the same company: a couple of teenagers and a pet/mascot, solving mysteries - usually of a supernatural kind. Scooby-Doo, Funky Phantom, Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, just to name a few.

So I thought: Hey, I like making characters. I could make characters based on this classic premise. I already have a character that solves supernatural mysteries, don't I? Aw, but Sage isn't a teenager. But... surely she WAS at some point, right?

Yes. So much yes. I'm doing this.

Incidentally, giving Sage a supporting cast is something I've thought about for a while. But aside from her buddy Sass and her editor, I was always drawing a blank. Not so this time!

Sagacity Ophelia Sparks - aka Sage
The leader and driving force behind the team. She loves solving mysteries, is clever and fearless. She's also a bit too cocky and will try to do too much by herself. She's in the school newspaper and the Track & Field club. Call her Sagacity and she will glare at you. Call her Ophelia, and she will punch you in the face. Yeah, her hair is brown! You didn't think the partially-platinum look of her older self was natural, did you?
I originally created Sage as a mascot for a webcomic collective I was a part of, which has since died off. For a time she was the star of the collective's collective comic, which only lasted around 5 pages. Later I entered her into an OC Pageant.

Flowerpot Pomegranate Starkey - aka Flo
Flo and Sage have been friends since elementary school, originally sitting next to each other because of their alphabetically-close surnames, and bonding over their unusual first names. She's easy-going and affectionate. She's also way too relaxed and sometimes goofy, even trying to befriend monsters. She's into spiritual new agey things, fairies, crystals, ghosts, etc. Also talented at various handicrafts.
(Based on a background character who appeared all of ONCE in Flaky Pastry)

Gabbiel Whitney Newman - aka Gab
Whereas Flo is into spirits, Gab is into aliens. He knows a lot about all things science AND science fiction. He's got a photographic memory and endless enthusiasm. He's also kind of wimpy, and once he gets started he just. won't. shut. up. When he gets interested in something, he'll forget about everything else around him. Also has a car.

Russel Tiberius Lynch - aka Rusty
Rusty is a tall, quiet football player. He's physically imposing, with strength to match, so he helps out when heavy lifting is required. He doesn't react very intensely to anything, leading many to think he may be slow-witted, but in reality, he sees everything. He has a number of fangirls, but remains aloof. Why does he even hang out with this group of nerds? Maybe he has a secret! (Of course he does, I just need to decide what it is)

Sass
Of course Sass is the pet/mascot! A lost baby bigfoot that Sage took in (and lent some t-shirts to). Sass is a little bundle of energy. She's curious about everything and loves to play pranks. She's also really REALLY good at remaining unseen when she wants to. How is she around in this teen-era, while she's still a tiny child in Sage's later adventures? I figure maybe sasquatches have a really long lifespan. Whatever.

Also more of that sylization.

Is Rusty a tiny alien operating a large humanoid exoskeleton?

That isn't one of the options I was considering, but I will consider it now!

The fantasy version of that option would be a gnome/goblin/pixie operating some sort of construct (either a clockwork or something animated by magic).

The next step is to animate a running cycle for each of them!
(not the actual next step)

I think I'm a bit older than you (at least I remember watching reruns of some of those)

My favorite bizarre scooby clone was Fangface.  The gimmick being that one of the mystery solving teens was a werewolf.  The trick being that a picture of the full moon was all that was needed to transform him.  And he kept trying to eat one of his friends... in a friendly Sylvester and Tweety kind of way.

I did see tons of reruns of one or two of those when I was a kid - ones other than Scooby-Doo, because everybody's seen Scooby-Doo in one form or another.
First I hear of Fangface! Another one on the pile :O

He's not saying it's aliens, but... it's aliens.
