15 polls later, I give you: Paul Pignon du Jasmin, and his alter ego Jazz.

Paul is a young adult, in his early twenties. Paul is the apprentice to a reputable wizard. Reputable, undoubtedly skilled and powerful, but expensive! To continue to afford his education and become a full-fledged wizard himself, Paul must work on the side. But Paul has standards. Paul has class. Paul is easily bored. He needs something glamorous and exciting. He needs to work as an assassin.

He also needs to hide his identity, so this criminal endeavour will not reflect badly on him or his mentor. Paul spends some time researching shape changing spells. In the end, the only thing he can manage is an enchanted tattoo that he can activate to change gender. He still looks almost the same, but not. That will do for him. And besides... it opens up so many OTHER possibilities.

Additional facts I have thought about:
I named his pet rat Anaxagoras. A mouthful, to be sure! Anaxagoras is the only one (at least, initially) to share Paul/Jazz's secret... and he's not telling anyone. As a wizard's apprentice's familiar, Anaxagoras is smart, resourceful, and often the target of various trial enchantments, which may or may not have lingering side-effects.
As an apprentice, Paul's magic is limited, so he has to use it creatively, and supplement it with a bit of athletics and a lot of fast-talk. It helps that things tend to go his way most times. One thing I imagine him being able to do is.... a letter-opener charm! To make his finger able to cut through paper... as well as skin and possibly other things, if the spell is properly overloaded.
The magical tattoo is on Paul's chest. You can see it at the top of the picture. When he's in male form, it takes the shape of a butterfly. When he turns into Jazz, the tattoo also changes, into a panther's face, which you can see on her cleavage.
Paul is very curious. Can't resist a mystery. This is why he gets sidetracked on his missions, and does detective work in addition to his killing.
Paul is also curious about other things. BI-curious. Don't think for a minute he won't explore the possibilities of his female form. Add to that that Paul is a charmer, a rake, a hedonist... and there's really nothing stopping him from sleeping with anyone. Not that being male had stopped him in the past.
Just a few partner ideas: his own wizard mentor (is it a man or a woman?), other fellow apprentices, assassination clients, possible victims, bystanders, rival assassins, agents of the law trying to catch the mysterious assassin? Any of these he could woo in EITHER form. ...possibly BOTH forms, in some cases. Crazy!
Paul has a family. I don't know any more than that.
Since he wears glasses, I imagine Paul to be FAR-sighted (hypermetrope). This would be why as a wizard's apprentice who reads a lot of books up close, he needs large glasses that cover his whole eyes, but as a free-roaming assassin dangling from ledges and looking out in the distance, she wears slightly smaller glasses, which it is easier to lower and peek over if necessary. This can also lead to jokes when someone comments on his impulsiveness and lack of foresight by saying "You're so near-sighted", to which he can reply "Actually, I'm far-sighted." Haha!.... ha... hum.
